Last Saturday County Legislator Rick Antelli and I hosted a child seat safety check at the Ridge Road Fire Department at 1299 Long Pond Road. First, I would like to thank the Fire District for allowing us to use their facility and providing technitions to work with the Sheriff’s deputies who staffed this event.

- County Legislator Jeff McCann talks to parents during the child safety seat inspection
I learned that almost 85% of all seats are not installed properly. While I was there, the first 4 seats checked were not properly fitted or installed.
This can result in serious injuries to children if they are involved in an accident. The Deputies involved in the checks take a 38 hour course before they work on these events.
As a parent of two children, it was a little unsettling to learn that due to the number of car seat manufacturers, car makers and car models, it is very likely at one time or another we had our seats installed improperly. Even if you buy the top of the line seats, which we did, their effectiveness is limited if the are not installed properly.
Again, I would like to thank all of those involved in this event.
